How to build a truly effective men's skincare routine

Men's skin has specific biological characteristics that change everything when it comes to choosing skincare. Here's what science says and how to build a routine tailored to your actual skin.

Men's skin is not identical to women's. This isn't marketing—it's physiology. Yet, the majority of men either use unsuitable products or no skincare at all.

Here's what science says about male skin, and how to build a routine that actually works.

An effective routine is more than just shower gel and aftershave. It starts with understanding what your skin truly is.

What biology says about male skin

Men's skin is, on average, 10 to 20% thicker than women's, particularly in the dermis. Testosterone stimulates collagen production, which delays the appearance of wrinkles. However, once the first signs appear, their progression is often faster and wrinkles deeper.

Sebum production is about twice that of female skin of the same age. Sebaceous glands are more numerous and more active due to androgens. This explains shine, enlarged pores, and adult acne that is more persistent in men than commonly thought.

Shaving represents repeated mechanical aggression. A man who shaves daily repeats this action thousands of times throughout his life. Each blade pass temporarily weakens the skin barrier, exposing the skin to irritations, redness, and chronic discomfort that are often underestimated.

The most common issues in men

Post-shave irritations—redness, burning, papules—result from a weakened barrier combined with overly aggressive products. Many men respond to shine by over-cleansing, which exacerbates the cycle: dry skin compensates by producing even more sebum.

Male skin sensitivity is systematically underestimated. Male skin can become reactive, uncomfortable, prone to diffuse redness—and often treated with overly stripping products that perpetuate the imbalance instead of correcting it.

The basics of a truly effective male routine

Smart cleansing: An adapted cleanser removes excess sebum without destroying the hydrolipidic film. One to two times a day maximum. Overly frequent or aggressive cleansing weakens the barrier and further stimulates the sebaceous glands.

Moisturize even when skin is oily: This is the most common misunderstanding. Oily skin can simultaneously be dehydrated—lacking water in the superficial layers—without being dry. A light, non-comedogenic moisturizer is sufficient in most cases.

Care for post-shave: Rather than an alcohol-based product that burns and dehydrates, a treatment containing allantoin, panthenol, or niacinamide strengthens the barrier weakened by the blade and reduces post-shave inflammation.

Sun protection: This is the most neglected step, yet the most scientifically validated. Daily SPF 30 minimum sun protection is the only ingredient whose anti-aging efficacy is undeniably proven. It also prevents hyperpigmentation and skin cancers, whose incidence is significantly higher in men.

The truly relevant active ingredients for male skin

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) regulates sebum production, reduces the appearance of enlarged pores, soothes post-shave inflammation, and strengthens the skin barrier. It is the most versatile active ingredient for common male skin issues. Effective dose: between 4 and 10%.

Low-dose retinol is relevant from the appearance of the first wrinkles or texture irregularities. Male skin, being thicker, often tolerates it well. Gradual introduction is mandatory: once to twice a week initially, only in the evening.

Zinc PCA locally regulates sebaceous production and has mild anti-inflammatory properties—particularly interesting for oily skin prone to imperfections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find a suitable men's skincare routine on Paradermia?
Yes. Our pharmacist offers a selection of skincare products designed for the specific needs of male skin: an adapted cleanser, a light moisturizer, post-shave care, and sun protection. The routine is built to be simple, effective, and well-tolerated daily.

Are specifically formulated products for men necessary?
What matters is the formulation, not the label. Some men's products have adapted textures—lighter, faster-absorbing—but the effective active ingredients are the same. Your skin diagnosis takes precedence over the packaging gender.

Does shaving exacerbate skin aging?
Shaving actually provides a slight mechanical exfoliation that can keep the complexion clearer. The real aggravating factor is the irritating products used before and after, which chronically weaken the skin barrier in the long term.
