Serum A5 is formulated with 5% azelaic acid, a natural dicarboxylic acid with a multimodal mechanism. At this concentration, azelaic acid exerts a gentle keratolytic action on hyperkeratotic keratinocytes, inhibits tyrosinase (reducing localized melanogenesis), and counteracts inflammatory mediators responsible for redness—a particularly interesting action profile for reactive skin prone to couperose. In comparison, 15-20% azelaic acid is used as a topical medication (Skinoren® / Finacea®, prescription); at 5%, it falls within the cosmetic range with an excellent tolerance profile. The 2% niacinamide content is modest but complementary: it blocks melanosome transfer and strengthens the skin barrier function. Panthenol supports epidermal repair. Important formulation note: the first ingredient in the INCI list is Propylene Glycol (PG, traditional 1,2-propanediol)—not Propanediol (1,3-propanediol, also known as "clean propanediol" derived from fermentation). PG is the necessary solvent to dissolve azelaic acid in a stable aqueous solution. It can cause a mild reaction in skin that is very reactive to PG—this is rare but should be anticipated with a patch test. No contraindications during pregnancy—azelaic acid is one of the few depigmenting/blemish-regulating formulas safe for use during pregnancy, with melasma gravidarum being a documented off-label indication. Non-photosensitizing.
